If Mets Need A Starter, Free Agent Pitchers Still Available

Colon: oh how we miss you. (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images)

When the New York Mets decided to not pursue veteran Bartolo Colon this past offseason, some writers voiced concern. Aside from being a beloved clubhouse presence, Colon, 43, had also been a consistent, injury-free producer.

In the throes of already losing both Steven Matz and Seth Lugo to indefinite maladies, it was nothing if not poetic dark to then witness Colon stymie Mets hitters as a member of the Atlanta Braves yesterday evening. Colon, as he did for the Mets on many occasions over the past three seasons, tossed six effortless innings of two-hit, one-run baseball. The Mets ultimately lost, 3-1.

Their rotation depth sapped, the Mets are banking on Zack Wheeler and Matt Harvey to stay healthy and perform. Needless to say, how wonderful would it be to have Colon back now?

With Colon a moot point, the Mets could still alternatively turn to a free agent; both Colby Lewis and Doug Fister remain available.

Lewis, 37, missed significant time in 2016 with a strained lat muscle in the back of his right pitching shoulder as a member of the Texas Rangers. Even though his 3.71 ERA in ’16 was impressive, Lewis’ peripherals—like his 4.81 FIP and .241 BABIP—suggested it might not be sustainable. Given his demand for a major league contract, Lewis was unable to find a new home in the offseason.

Apparently, the Rangers "miss" the right-hander. Perhaps the Mets need to act now.

Fister, who spent 2014 and 2015 with the Washington Nationals, is no stranger to the National League East. After a lackluster ’15 campaign where he was ultimately moved to the bullpen, Fister, 32, signed a one-year, $7 million contract with the Houston Astros, and posted a 4.64 ERA over 32 starts.
