Senegal survive late Poland onslaught to throw Group H wide open

Senegal got their World Cup campaign off to a winning start with a 2-1 victory over Poland that threw Group H wide open. After Japan had earlier beaten group favourites Colombia, Poland will have gone into this game considered likely to finish in top spot, but a performance that only truly kicked into life in the match's latter stages left them with nothing.
Senegal went ahead as half time approached after Everton midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye's shot was deflected into the net by a helpless Thiago Cionek for what is the 2018 World Cup's fourth own goal.Aliou Cisse's side doubled their lead when two former Premier League players were involved in a catastrophic mix-up, as Grzegorz Krychowiak, who spent last season on loan at West Brom, underhit a backpass towards former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, and M'Baye Niang stole in to take advantage.Poland pulled a goal back with five minutes to go when Krychowiak headed in from a free-kick but an equaliser eluded them.
